Nano Coatings 101

In the last few years, the automotive detailing industry has been revolutionized by new nano-based coatings. This article will serve as an introduction to this new technology and to also debunk some myths about what they are, and what they are not.

Nanocoatings, Ceramic technology, Glass shields…etc…There are many different terms for these products which can cause some confusion. For the sake of this article, I will refer to them as nanocoatings. It is important to note, a nano-coating is not a wax or a paint sealant that washes away over time, they are products that form a permanent bond to your vehicles surface. So what is this magic stuff anyways…?

For the most part, nanocoatings are clear, liquid products that are applied by hand. When cured, this technology transforms itself on the surface to a permanent, rigid, flexible glass shield. The word “glass” is often used to describe the shine and gloss effect, not to be confused with glass – once cured it does not crack or ship like glass, it can still bend and flex on a painted panel, just like a clear coat does. The best way to describe these products is like an additional sacrificial clear coat, with some brands having up to 3 times the hardness and self-cleaning properties of a factory clear coat.

Why coat your vehicle?

The nano coating will protect the exterior and interior of the vehicle from deteriorating. Once the coating is applied you will see a mirror effect, glossiness and colour depth, incomparable to any wax. With proper maintenance, your car’s finish will shine for many years to come. The slickness of the coated surface doesn’t allow dirt, brake dust and tar to stick to your car’s paint, wheels or glass. This makes washing your vehicle less labour-intensive and less frequent. Waxing is now obsolete. Any surface scratches that happen in the coating can be removed with light polishing which will not weaken the integrity of the original clear coat. Glossy, slick and self-cleaning, this nanotechnology allows the nanoparticles (nano – meaning very small atomic level particles) to fill the smallest pores in the paint which makes the surface shiny, smooth and extremely slick or hydrophobic by dramatically lowering the surface tension preventing environmental contaminants such as: bird droppings, bugs, dirt, tar and graffiti paint from bonding to the surface. Water easily removes dirt from the surface by encapsulating it while rolling off the surface. This is often called the self-cleaning effect achieved by these coatings.

Having a nanocoating applied to your car does not mean you can park it under a pine tree for a year, let bird droppings bake in the sun for a month or take it through those evil automated car washes. The coated surface can still be scratched if proper maintenance techniques are not followed. While most brands of coatings are harder than factory clear coats, you must still take regular precautions.

I would suggest you start by determining your objectives, is its ease of maintenance for a daily driver, getting your paint to look like glass, eliminate brake dust from sticking to your wheels and calipers? This way, you can find the right product and package. Find an installer who is trained and certified to apply the product and a product that offers a warranty, some of these stay with the vehicle with a limited lifetime warranty offering the best value. Once coated you will enjoy a vehicle with a depth of shine and gloss like no wax can provide and ease of maintenance.

Now is the time to spend more time driving and less time cleaning your vehicle!
